5 ACTIONABLE WAYS TO OVERCOME YOUR FEAR AND TAKE THE FIRST STEP
OVERCOME YOUR FEAR IN 5 ACTIONABLE STEPS
Fear is always at the background of every goal we want to achieve in life.
Take a moment to think about your biggest dreams and goals, those very ones that set your heart racing with excitement but when it was time to execute, you stopped.
Because of the voice whispering in your head:
Are you really sure about this?
Do you have all you need to make this work?
What if you make a fool of yourself?
And then the excuses begin as we STOP in our tracks, trying to reason out the thoughts which in itself can take as long as FOREVER.
Fear: 1, Your dreams: Zero
That’s brutish, isn’t it?
The truth is, taking the first step is usually the hardest because it is actually the one that entrenches our desire for change.
And change is sometimes scary regardless of how much we’d wanted or desired it.
So fear steps in and stops us from stepping out.
More than 2 decades ago, I was just starting my love affair with the world of science and it was in Physics class that I first learned about Newton’s First Law of Motion which is also known as the Law of Inertia.
The law states that a body at rest tends to stay that way unless acted upon by an external force.
Same law goes for a body in motion, it will continue moving until an external force stops it.
Not to bore you with my science gibberish but we, humans are built that way.
So there. You have the validation, I was over the moon when I found out it was completely normal to want to lie in bed, all day with my favourite book or movie.
Whatever state we are in which is also known as our comfort or predictability or home zone comes with all its perks (think: a warm duvet on a rainy day) so much that the thought (or fear) of the unknown (like having a cold shower) keeps us riveted to the same bed, sorry, spot.
Where we are is comfortable enough so why move when we really don’t have to?
Taking the first step to move or get out of bed means we want to step into a sometimes unfamiliar terrain, somewhere completely different where things might not actually move the way we project or anticipate.
Our good ol’ subconscious tries to goad us on, telling us what we stand to lose on the other side of our action IF we step out and fail.
That line of reasoning is amplified over the flip version of what we stand to gain if we step out and succeed.
It tells us about how there might be icy sprays of water that might freeze our brain or failure or rejection down the line.
So we stay where we are (under the cozy, familiar duvet), trying to buy time while our mind screams for change.
All of this is completely normal and we’d hardly be human to not experience this on our life’s journey.
But we can feel all of these and still manage to make it less scary to move. Here’s how we can overcome our fears and step out into abundance (whatever that means for you):
STEP 1: ACCEPT YOUR FEARS AND USE THEM AS STEPPING STONES
Understand that fear of the unknown is completely normal. So when we are afraid of what comes next after our big plans, we should not beat ourselves up for lacking the will to move immediately. Rather we should accept and acknowledge our fears and go further in making steps out of the bricks.
Let the steps move you further to want to try out what is on the other side.
STEP 2: WRITE DOWN YOUR FEARS
Itemise everything you think might not work out well with your next move or business idea.
Bringing our fears to life puts things in perspective because those fears are now right in front of you, staring you in the face. They have a life of their own not only in your mind or head but now on your screen or on a piece of paper and the beautiful thing is you can now decide to do something about it and get it out of the way.
STEP 3: WRITE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT BIG THING YOU ARE PLANNING TO DO
Writing down your plans further puts the fears you have into perspective and it also gives you the courage to keep working. Take it a step further by transforming your plans into SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound) GOALS.
STEP 4: BREAK DOWN YOUR PLANS INTO BITE-SIZED STEPS
Keep breaking / scaling down the steps until you come to the smallest possible unit for you to work on. Then focus on that first and ask yourself what you need to bring it to life within the shortest possible period. Rinse and repeat for all other steps. One thing this step does is it helps you to be more confident and also helps you to gain momentum on your journey. The further you go, the more confident you’ll become.
STEP 5: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GOOD PEOPLE WHO ARE VESTED IN YOUR PROGRESS
This is your tribe and could be your friend(s), family, FB Group or WhatsApp Group (people on the same journey as you). Speak about your fears, interact, ask questions and feel free to ask for help. For all you know, someone else might be having the same fears as you. Engaging with the right group or community helps you further in overcoming your fear and reaching your goals faster.
At the end, you’ll find out that everything pulling you back exists only in your head.
I hope you will make up your mind today to break the barriers fear have placed around you and take that first step into your abundance.
